CEREC - Same-Day Crowns

CEREC utilizes advanced computer-assisted design software and manufacturing technology that allows the dentist to create custom-made crowns in-office while you wait. CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic.

How Does CEREC Work?

CEREC uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) to produce better, smarter fitting dental products. CAD/CAM involves the use of digital scanners. These digital scanners form a three-dimensional image of the tooth that is readable by the computer. It is then used as a personalized reference while forming a product.

More specifically, the dentist uses a scanner to take a digital image of the tooth/teeth. In case of a broken or decaying tooth, the dentist corrects the damaged portion digitally on a computer. The computer then uses the correct image, also called a digital impression, and draws the data into a computer. Proprietary software then creates a replacement part for the missing areas of the tooth, creating a virtual restoration. This is called reverse engineering.

This virtual information is then sent to a milling machine that cuts and drills a solid chunk of ceramic or composite resin into the replacement parts of the virtual image. The grinding time in the milling machine varies from 4 minutes to 20 minutes and it is conditional on the complication of the reinstatement and the versions of milling divisions.

In addition, 3D printing techniques are also used to fashion, join and solidify powder grains or liquid granules in a three-dimensional form under computer control.

Since ceramic resins have a porcelain white color, the computer device also uses the information from actual teeth scans to dye the newly forming tooth/teeth parts into the actual color of your natural teeth.

Why Should You Opt for CEREC Same-Day Crowns?

CEREC same-day crowns are trending these days due to CAD/CAM technology. Patients no longer need to wait weeks as their digital scans and x-rays are sent off to a lab to have their crowns created.

CEREC same-day crowns offer our patients a number of advantages, including:

  • Same-day treatment designed to restore your smile back to health.
  • Natural-looking crowns that blend seamlessly into your smile.
  • No need for temporary crowns that take multiple appointments to complete.
  • No need to take an impression of your teeth using messy silicone.
  • State-of-the-art technology that offers great looking and lasting results.
  • No need to use any metal in the fabrication of your dental crowns.

What Other Materials Can Be Used in CEREC?

Apart from ceramic, there are materials like porcelain, metals, and porcelain fused to metal crowns and other products that can be used to form products via CAD/CAM for CEREC.

Why is CEREC Preferred Over Traditional Methods?

There are several reasons why CEREC same-day crowns are preferred over the traditional method of producing crowns, some of which include:

  • CEREC takes less time. The procedure takes place in a single sitting, whereas, the traditional method takes a week, and still takes even longer if there is a fitting issue.
  • CEREC is extremely precise, the products that are formed fit perfectly.
  • There is less inconvenience for the patient. The dentist puts in all effort at one time and the patient can leave when the job is done. The patient does not need to come back for multiple appointments.
  • The single-sitting procedure reduces the chance of error and again, makes for a better fit.
  • These dental products are sprayed by dyes to match the natural color of teeth as best as possible, with the help of advanced computerized techniques (e.g., CAD/CAM).
  • The patient does not need to bite down on alginate which may leave a bad taste in the mouth.
  • The patient saves money on multiple appointments as only one appointment takes care of the issue.
  • CERE same-day crowns restore a smile within a few hours.
  • CEREC crowns are made within a day and do not require any temporary crowns, hence, eliminating any chance of injury. In the case of traditional crowns, temporary crowns are fitted before customized ones arrive. These traditional crowns can slip and cause injuries in the mouth.
  • Teeth alter your speech, smile and eating patterns. Same-day crowns restore all these functions immediately.
  •  Dislodged temporary crowns may make room for decay. This does not happen with CEREC crowns.
  •  Same-day crowns also keep your tooth stronger as they require less drilling and save more of your tooth.

How Long Does it Take?

For a single tooth, CEREC usually takes anywhere from 90-120 minutes. The majority of that time is spent designing and milling the restoration.

What is Involved in the Procedure?

On the day of the procedure, the dentist numbs the tooth and prepares the tooth accordingly. Once the restoration is completed (designed and milled), it is adjusted, bonded into the tooth, and polished.

How Long Does a CEREC Crown Last?

CEREC crowns are very durable and well-fitted, assuming the shape of actual teeth.  With a CEREC crown, you can expect to have many years of trouble-free service, especially if taken care of properly.
